Well, I ran 3 times this week. It wasn’t easy either, because I didn’t want to run when I got home or wake up on Saturday and Sunday before 7 A.M. But I did it! I did it because I signed up for the Cap 10 K and the thought of not preparing myself is unacceptable. In addition to running 3 times I performed push ups, triceps pushes and core exercises like planks and ab crunches. I am sore and want to be able to see the results right now but I know that is not realistic. Next week, I will run 3 or more times.

We eat a gluten free (GF), mostly dairy-free, mostly refined sugar-free diet. This Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons I really struggled with sugar, in the form of delicious GF cookies (oatmeal, pecan, chocolate chip) and GF banana bread that Judy and her mom made. We also consumed our share of wine (liquid sugar) with all sorts of delicious entrees! The two things I noticed the most with this increase in sugar was 1) my abdomen bloating increased significantly as my cumulative sugar consumption increased and 2) the more sugar I ate, the more I craved! Check out our class, “5 Weeks to a Healthier, Leaner You,” for support in going gluten, dairy and sugar-free.

I grew up eating Ho Hos, Swiss Rolls, Nutter Butters, Ding Dongs, M&M’s, Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Captain Crunch, Fruit Loops, Trix, and, oh, so much more. I have made tremendous strides over the last 4-5 years to decrease my consumption of sugar-laden foods. It is amazing how quickly and intensely my body craves sweets when I reintroduce them into my diet!

Today, my daughter AnMarie and I spent an hour with Valerie Hunt of ValerieFit.com receiving coaching on running technique, specifically the Pose Method. The Pose Method® is a system for teaching of human movement developed by a 2-time Olympic Coach Dr. Nicholas S. Romanov in 1977 in the former Soviet Union. The name of the method comes from the word “pose” or “body position.” Valerie took video of us running, trained us how to do 3-4 basic movements and then videoed us again. The difference was amazing! AnMarie runs track, a sprinter, and struggles with shin splints and I have lumbar disc degeneration. Our goal was to learn how to run with less effort, more efficiency and balance and decrease injury risk. The improvement we felt and saw on the video after such a short coaching session was amazing! I felt more bounce in my step and less stress in my knees, ankles and back! Valerie is a great coach!!!

On January 1st, I signed up for the Austin Capital 10K. The one area in my wellness I continually struggle with is my fitness. I have many of the great excuses that get in the way of fitness: four kids, a busy business owner, giving my youngest two children a ride to school in the morning which requires 5 am work out time, etc… I need accountability and a reason to train. The Cap 10K is what started my training program three years ago culminating in performing in two Austin ½ marathons. My goal is to begin training for the Austin Cap 10K and pick a big event to work towards, a marathon, triathalon, etc… I will keep you up to date a we go through the process. – Dr. Jeff Ulery

According to Oriental medicine, the cold months of winter are the perfect time to recharge your battery and generate vital energy, or Qi, in order to live, look, and feel your best.

The ancient Chinese believed that human beings should live in harmony with the natural cycles of their environment. The cold and darkness of winter urges us to slow down. This is the time of year to reflect on health, replenish energy and conserve strength.Ruled by the water element, winter is associated with the kidneys, bladder and adrenal glands. The kidneys are considered the source of all energy or “Qi” within the body. They store all of the reserve Qi in the body so that it can be used in times of stress and change, or to heal, prevent illness and age gracefully.

Winter is the season where all living things slow down, conserve their energy and prepare for the outburst of new life and energy in the spring.

Eat warm hearty soups, whole grains, and roasted nuts to help warm the body’s core and to keep nourished. Sleep early, rest well, stay warm, and expend a minimum quantity of energy.

While optimal health and well-being in the winter season calls for rest, energy conservation and the revitalization of body and spirit, your holiday activities may have a different agenda.

The holidays can be filled with a dizzying array of demands, visitors, travel and frantic shopping trips. For many people, it is also a time filled with sadness, self-reflection, loneliness and anxiety. Compound the usual seasonal pressures with the constant barrage of bad economic news and you may find this to be one of the most emotionally trying times of the year.

Stress, anxiety and depression can cause a disruption in the flow of vital energy, or Qi, through the body. These energetic imbalances can throw off the immune system or cause symptoms of pain, sleep disturbances, abnormal digestion, headaches, and menstrual irregularities, and, over time, more serious illnesses can develop.

Acupuncture treatments can correct these imbalances and directly affect the way your body manages stress and your mental health.

Seasonal acupuncture treatments in winter serve to nurture and nourish kidney Qi which can greatly enhance the body’s ability to thrive in times of stress, aid in healing, prevent illness and increase vitality.

Call us now at (512) 410-7935 and schedule your seasonal acupuncture tune-up today!

Definition

Cluster headaches affect one side of the head (unilateral) and may be associated with tearing of the eyes and nasal congestion. They occur in clusters, happening repeatedly every day at the same time for several weeks and then remitting.

Cluster headaches are a fairly common form of chronic, recurrent headache. Unlike migraines, they affect men more often than women. They can affect people of any age but are most common between adolescence and middle age. There does not seem to be a pattern among families in the development of cluster headaches.

Cluster headaches occur as a severe, sudden headache. The onset is sudden, and it occurs most commonly during the dreaming (REM) phase of sleep. Cluster headaches may occur daily for months, alternating with periods without headaches (episodic), or they can occur for a year or more without stopping (chronic). A person may experience alternating chronic and episodic phases.

Symptoms

• SWELLING UNDER OR AROUND THE EYES

• RED EYE (ON THE AFFECTED SIDE)

• FLUSHED FACE

• EXCESSIVE TEARS (ON THE AFFECTED SIDE)

• RUNNY NOSE OR NASAL CONGESTION

• BEGINS SUDDENLY

• PAIN COMMONLY BEGINS 2 TO 3 HOURS AFTER FALLING ASLEEP AND IS STEADY, SHARP, OR BURNING.

Characteristically occurs on one side of the head and may occur in and around one eye. May involve one side of the face from neck to temples. Pain quickly gets worse, peaking within 5 to 10 minutes and peak may last one-half to two hours.
