So….
This training program has gone nothing like I planned it to go! The sprained ankle last week really dampened my spirits, but I rebounded with workouts on the Stairmaster twice last week and twice this week. In addition, I had additional stress with the loss of my father last week and the subsequent planning of the funeral service. I canceled my patient schedule on Monday to recharge my batteries and got a long trail walk on the Greenbelt by Mopac and 360 (extremely healing). With the loss of my father, I thought I was going to have to travel to Houston to handle details which gave me a fantastic reason not to do the Cap 10K. When the travel to Houston was delayed I still considered not to attend the Cap 10K for all of the obvious reasons; improper training, ankle not fully healed, I need some rest, etc… I will attend the Cap 10K on Sunday and I have chosen to mostly walk it with sprinkled jogging.

Oh, by the way, I finally signed up for a package of 8 yoga sessions at Yoga Yoga. I will attend my first yoga class, probably on Saturday.

Reviews of “Life After Bread”:
“A breakthrough book that offers you a road map toward better mental and physical health-providing nutritional insights that even your doctor may not know!” – Dr. John Gray, author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus

“Packed with truths and a gimlet-eyed view of the path to diagnosis, Eydi Bauer’s journey to the gluten-free life connects the dots with a woman’s heart and a physician’s wisdom.”- Jax Peters Lowell, author of The Gluten-Free Bible and Against the Grain

“Life After Bread is an excellent book for anyone, especially readers new to the possibility of being celiac or of gluten affecting their life adversely.” – GlutenFreeHelp.info

Is Going Gluten Free Right for You? Advice from a Holistic Doctor

Dr. Eydi Bauer, author of “Life After Bread,”
leads workshop at Whole Body Health

Austin - Dr. Eydi Bauer of Whole Body Health in Austin, and author of “Life After Bread: Get Off Gluten and Reclaim Your Health,” suffered from undiagnosed chronic health problems for over 20 years. She experienced pain, fatigue, stomach and intestinal problems, menstrual irregularities, and even some depression and anxiety. At the age of 33, after years of working with doctors of all types with no success, it took a serious health crisis to determine the cause of her problems. She was diagnosed with celiac disease.

As soon as she began following a gluten free diet, her health was restored. Dr. Bauer leads a workshop about the benefits of a gluten-free diet at Whole Body Health, 2525 Wallingwood Drive, Suite 1500, on Wednesday, March 21 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The workshop fee is $20. To register call (512) 328-5200 or email info@austinwholebodyhealth.com.

The Life After Bread workshop will cover the symptoms of gluten sensitivity, the benefits and how to navigate a gluten-free diet.

Gluten is a chemical commonly found in wheat and in some of the most popular foods in the all American diet. One person in every hundred has gluten intolerance. Three more out of every hundred people show gluten sensitivity. Gluten intolerance can cause serious damage to the human body.

More and more people are waking up to the fact that some of the most common foods we eat can be hazardous to our health. Even Oprah went on a gluten-free diet last year.

Dr. Bauer, who recently joined Austin’s Whole Body Health, a wellness center, previously practiced in Mendocino, California.

She says, “Gluten intolerance is a serious and widespread nutritional problem that is causing an incredible array of health problems in America. It is also largely unrecognized by the Western medical establishment.”

Dr. Bauer says that people with gluten sensitivity can experience a wide range of symptoms of pain and inflammation. Gluten intolerance can cause back and joint pain, stiffness, headache, fatigue, digestive distress, arthritis, skin disorders and itchiness, anxiety, depression and other psychological problems.

Over 1,300 gluten free products are now available on supermarket shelves in the United States. There are alternatives to most common favorite foods including breads, bagels, beer, pasta, cereals, and even cakes, and other mainstay foods you are accustomed to.

A doctor of chiropractic and an applied kinesiologist specializing in nutrition and food allergy testing, she has been in practice for fourteen years. Dr. Bauer specializes in clinical nutrition, muscle testing and emotional clearing. She is certified in the Brimhall technique and the Six Steps to Wellness, the same philosophy and approach that Dr. Jeff Ulery incorporates in his treatments.

I have really struggled with my training! Every time I run, even a short distance, my calves start to cramp up.

I went through the checklist:

1) correct shoes

2) improved running form (The Pose Method)

3) adjustments, massage and acupuncture for body balance and alignment

4) diet free of inflammatory foods

5) hydration.

These things have helped overall, but I’m still cramping some.

I then realized that my whole life is centered around go, go, go, just like most others in this day and age. We are plugged in 24/7 – internet, laptop, desktop, smartphone, email, Facebook, Twitter … Even when we are “relaxing” we are running our daily check lists in our minds or we’re trying to balance all of our “to do” balls in the air.

All of these mental gymnastics keep us in sympathetic overload, which is where I am now! Our bodies are designed to unplug! The unplugging is where our body rests, repairs and rejuvenates. The parasympathetic nervous system is what controls the rest, repair and rejuvenate of our systems. What I realized was that I am not getting enough of the parasympathetic stimulation to my system. My solution is to incorporate more exercise that will enhance the repair and relaxation part of my nervous system, like QiGong and Yoga (Hatha and Relaxation). I’ll let you know how it goes!

Well, I ran 3 times this week. It wasn’t easy either, because I didn’t want to run when I got home or wake up on Saturday and Sunday before 7 A.M. But I did it! I did it because I signed up for the Cap 10 K and the thought of not preparing myself is unacceptable. In addition to running 3 times I performed push ups, triceps pushes and core exercises like planks and ab crunches. I am sore and want to be able to see the results right now but I know that is not realistic. Next week, I will run 3 or more times.

We eat a gluten free (GF), mostly dairy-free, mostly refined sugar-free diet. This Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons I really struggled with sugar, in the form of delicious GF cookies (oatmeal, pecan, chocolate chip) and GF banana bread that Judy and her mom made. We also consumed our share of wine (liquid sugar) with all sorts of delicious entrees! The two things I noticed the most with this increase in sugar was 1) my abdomen bloating increased significantly as my cumulative sugar consumption increased and 2) the more sugar I ate, the more I craved! Check out our class, “5 Weeks to a Healthier, Leaner You,” for support in going gluten, dairy and sugar-free.

I grew up eating Ho Hos, Swiss Rolls, Nutter Butters, Ding Dongs, M&M’s, Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Captain Crunch, Fruit Loops, Trix, and, oh, so much more. I have made tremendous strides over the last 4-5 years to decrease my consumption of sugar-laden foods. It is amazing how quickly and intensely my body craves sweets when I reintroduce them into my diet!

Today, my daughter AnMarie and I spent an hour with Valerie Hunt of ValerieFit.com receiving coaching on running technique, specifically the Pose Method. The Pose Method® is a system for teaching of human movement developed by a 2-time Olympic Coach Dr. Nicholas S. Romanov in 1977 in the former Soviet Union. The name of the method comes from the word “pose” or “body position.” Valerie took video of us running, trained us how to do 3-4 basic movements and then videoed us again. The difference was amazing! AnMarie runs track, a sprinter, and struggles with shin splints and I have lumbar disc degeneration. Our goal was to learn how to run with less effort, more efficiency and balance and decrease injury risk. The improvement we felt and saw on the video after such a short coaching session was amazing! I felt more bounce in my step and less stress in my knees, ankles and back! Valerie is a great coach!!!
